Cafés

I really like good coffee, and I really like a good coffee shop. A pretty coffee shop with a view, people watching, and a hot cup of bright single origin pour-over is my idea of relaxation.

When I had an opportunity to design cafes for Blue Bottle, I leaped at it. I immediately knew they saw the same delights in a well designed café and were looking to make good spaces.

Each café is fast, about one year each, and a mix of different rented storefronts each required a new touch. I became deft at navigating the strange requests of various health departments and began to know where we could push a reasonable budget to do expressive and unordinary things. Working on more than six cafes over three years, I got to test and experiment and improve. Different materials, developing furniture, developing kitchen space, developing attitudes and techniques to make the best coffee shop out of any storefront.

Work performed while practicing at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, San Francisco.
