Fir Bookshelves

Displaying books and providing storage in a small living room required two tall cabinets flanking the fireplace. Shelves are spaced to hold most books rather than being made adjustable. This allowed us to make a simpler and sturdier bookshelf that would support any literature or tchotchke. A bigger counter space is for current reads, bookmarked and ready to pick up anytime.

The wood is Douglas Fir; It’s warmth as a backdrop to the best books in the house being displayed and celebrated. The texture of the wood and some simple details are enough in a room already detailed with Edwardian plaster moldings.

Fir Benches

This matched pair of wooden benches are a favorite sort of ambiguous furniture, tiptoeing a path between bed and seat. They are scaled to fit a reclining person each, and they happen to fit within the three walls of the dining room. 

They are fabricated from straight grain Douglas Fir. The seating surface is sturdy but subtly textured 

Seating a group at the dining table, lying down to read a book within earshot of people cooking, spreading out a project between two, or providing a toddler an enticing play structure, these wooden benches accommodate variety and flexibility while looking sharp.
